If it’s being two years since you are living in Spain than it is the time for you re-new your driving license. If you are European citizen and moved to Spain two years ago then you must have applied for a driving License. However, under new EU regulations such citizens have to renew their driving license to keep their vehicles on the roads of Spain. In an online press release, details of private meeting between Spanish DGT traffic authority and representative of 28 states were shared. In this meeting, new EU regulations were decided, and all the decisions where made public.
When you are Eligible to renew your Driving License:
These new regulations were applied to all European citizen who visited Spain after 19th Jan, 2013 and got themselves registered as Spanish citizen officially. As soon as there resident ship is accepted by the higher authorities, there clock started, which means after completing two years of stay in Spain they have to renew their driving license. For example, if you got your citizen ship on 1st Mar, 2014, you will have to renew your driving license from the concerned authorities before 1st Mar, 2016.
Types of Vehicles under New Laws:
- Category 1: AM, A1, A2, A, B, and BE typed vehicles with 15 years of license were placed in this category, according to the new rule book.
- Category 2: Larger vehicles including BTP, C1, C1E, CE, D1, D1E, D, and DE are categorized here with 5 year of license.
Why these Changes were made?
These changes are the part of 2006/ 126/ EC. These changes were done to enhance the road safety experience of citizens of Spain. Another objective of this change was to make sure that all citizens are using EU style driving license. Prior to these laws, there were 110 different styles of driving license. However, the regulation made in 2013 dissolved all those and merged them into new EU style driving License.
How to Apply to Renew Your Driving Licesne:
In order to refresh your driving license, you have to contact DGT traffic officer. You can either make a call at 060 or visit their website to get this done. For online registration, here is your link: http://www.dgt.es/
Once you contact them, they will give you an appointment to renew your driving license from nearest local traffic authority office. Before getting this appointment, you will have to pass the Basic fitness from the reliable medical services. For application processing, following documents are required:
- Recent photograph 32 x 26 mm.
- Completely and clearly filled application form.
- Passport or NIE.
- Proof of resident in Spain.
- Original driving license and a photocopy of it.
- Receipt of payment few for the new driving license. Fee for this purpose is 23.50 Euro.
What will happen if License is expired?
You will be fine heavily according to the date of expiry of you driving License. That’s why, it is high recommended to refresh your driving license to avoid such consequences.
