7th February 2016 by Rainer Hobrack

Generic Name: sildenafil

Brand Names: Viagra

Viagra comes under the drug named sildenafil. It relaxes muscles and works by increasing the blood flow to certain areas of the human body. Impotence in men is treated through this medication. Revatio is the other brand of the drug sildenafil suitable to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. People also take the help of this medication to increase their exercise capacity.

Viagra is a significant medication. It can demonstrate serious dangerous consequences if taken with other medication such as riociguat (Adempas). It is not advisable to take Viagra with nitrate drug like isosorbide mononitrate, nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate or recreational drugs poppers for chest pain or heart problems. Sildenafil with a combination of nitrate medicine immediately decrease your blood pressure.

Seek the help of a doctor in case your erection is painful or continue for a period longer than 4 hours. It may cause damage to the penis. Do not use Viagra and seek emergency medical attention if you experience sudden vision loss.

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to sildenafil or any other ingredient present in the medicine. You should not use Viagra if you are taking the drug like riociguat (Adempas) to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Treatment of Viagra is not safe for people with the health conditions like coronary artery disease, heart disease, heart rhythm problems, a case of a heart attack in the last 6 months, congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, blood cell disorder, high blood pressure, bleeding disorder, a stomach ulcer, retinitis pigmentosa (related to eye condition), a physical deformity of the penis. People have been told not to have sexual intercourse for any other health condition should not take the medication.

Very rarely Viagra can cause sudden vision loss through decreasing the blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye. This medication is not expected to harm an unborn baby. The medication can only be used by adults over the age of 18 years. Do not take the medication without a doctor’s advice.

Viagra is not a regular medication and cannot be taken for a long period of time. Take Viagra exactly as prescribed by your doctor in correct doses. Do not take Viagra in larger amount than recommended or more than once per day. You can take the medication before 30 minutes to 1 hour of having sexual activity. The medicine acts as a sexual stimulator and may help you have an erection. Follow the doctor’s instructions exactly because erection will not occur only by through taking a tablet.

Take the help of a doctor if during the sexual intercourse you have pain, numbness, tingling in your chest, neck, arms, jaw or if you become dizzy or nauseated. This serious side effect of Viagra sometimes leads to fatal consequences.

Take immediate medical help if you have any serious side effect of Viagra like the symptoms of sudden hearing loss, irregular heartbeat, ringing in your ears, swelling in your hands or feet, convulsions, shortness of breath or a light-headed feeling.

Some common Viagra side effects may include the symptoms like flushing, abnormal blurred vision, headache, dizziness, stuffy nose; muscle pain, upset stomach and back pain;

You are not likely to miss a dose of Viagra as it is taken as and when needed.

The overdose of the medication may be dangerous. Call a doctor for emergency medical assistance or call the Poison Help line immediately.

Store the drug in a safe place out of the reach of children and pets. Keep it in a cool place away from moisture, heat and sunlight.

Do not drink alcohol during this medication. It may increase the effect alcohol and can cause serious side effects.
